At Gaines and Company, we know there can be a ton of questions about the ins and outs of the underground utilities business. That’s why we’ve compiled this listing of Frequently Asked Questions. How many offices do you have?

Two. Our office in Reisterstown handles most of the billings, payables and estimating. Our satellite office in Knightdale supports operation in North Carolina.

How many crews does the company run?

Gaines and Company now runs over 13 large pipe crews and 5 smaller service crews.

What size crew is your pipe crew?

In most cases, it will include about eight men, two excavators, two loaders, a roller, miscellaneous trench boxes, mizers, pumps, etc.

How many employees does the company have?

The company has approximately 100 employees – 65% in Maryland and 35% in North Carolina.

What size job does the company prefer?

Really, no job is too small or large. The most common size seems to be $500,000 to $5,000,000. Although, we currently have a $10,000,000 job under contract.

Can the company get a bond?

Yes, we have had a strong relationship with Surety companies for the past 50 years, and continue to have a great relationship with Safeco Insurance Company of America.

Does your company have a safety program?

Yes, we have an active program managed by Kevin Johnson in Maryland, and Paul Billings, Safety Coordinator in North Carolina.

Does the company own its equipment or lease it?

The company, through a sister company, the F & L Company, owns outright virtually all of its own equipment. The company also has a subsidiary company, First Class Hauling, that hauls heavy equipment for Gaines & Company and also for other contractors and equipment dealers in Maryland.
