Gaines Turns Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

Gaines and Company joined ARCO Construction, Gray and Son, and Gettle Inc. in a stand-down to focus on excavation safety while raising awareness about breast cancer.
If you walk onto ARCO Design/Build’s Performance Food Group (PFG) job site in New Windsor, Maryland, throughout the month of October, you will likely be met with a sea of pink. This isn’t a Halloween trick you are seeing; it is four companies standing together in support of breast cancer awareness. And on October 21, these four companies celebrated safe work while raising breast cancer awareness during a special safety stand-down.
Gaines and Company works closely with ARCO in both Maryland and North Carolina. Gaines is working as a subcontractor for Gray and Son on the PFG project, which is a parking lot extension project to accommodate PFG’s growth.
ARCO Design/Build’s Job Superintendent Dustin Hare mentioned wanting to have a safety stand-down to recognize October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Without hesitation, the four companies on the job (Gaines and Company, ARCO Design/Build, Gray and Son, and Gettle Inc.) pulled together to make shirts, offer food, and provide giveaways to engage employees on such an important topic.
“I personally had a friend pass away recently who had breast cancer. She beat it twice, but was then diagnosed with bone cancer, which ultimately took her life,” said Dustin. “I take as much time as possible to raise awareness about breast cancer.”
On top of his personal motives, Dustin also has ARCO’s support. ARCO gave out pink safety vests that crews wore throughout the job site the entire month of October. Additionally, ARCO donated money for breast cancer research and awareness for each picture posted online by an ARCO project supporting breast cancer awareness, up to $100 per project.
This stand-down happened to be planned right around the time Gaines finished excavation work for the project.
“Gaines exceeded our expectations,” said Dustin. “They did a great job with excavation, so we used this stand-down to celebrate their accomplishments, talk about trench safety, and raise awareness for breast cancer.”
“Many of us have stories of how we have been closely impacted by breast cancer,” said Safety Director Dominic Pope. “We were grateful to get together not as four companies, but as one team, to bring awareness to this awful disease.”
