Gaines Promotes From Within

Gaines and Company strives to uphold its 70+ year reputation of being the region’s premier turnkey site development company in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions. We credit our amazing team for getting us – and keeping us – here. How do we find a team this committed? Fortunately, we don’t have to look too far outside of our own organization.

“When it comes to filling our more senior positions, we first look at our current pool of talent,” said Safety Director Dominic Pope, who is instrumental in Gaines’s hiring process. “Every business operates differently. Our current employees know our style, structure, and expectations. They know our crews and the complexities of our work. Who better to advance their careers than those who are already committed to our organization?”

According to Business.com, not only does promoting within save the company time and money by eliminating the recruiting process and minimizing the learning curve, but it also boosts retention by keeping employees engaged and committed to internal goals.

It’s a win for those working for the newly promoted employee, too, since they are already familiar with their new boss’s work ethic and mentality. In fact, according to Forbes, 66% of people prefer being managed by someone promoted internally than someone hired externally.

“Currently in our Maryland location, there is not one foreman on our Utility side that has not first worked in the field for us. As for our Grading team, only two of our foremen did not work for our us prior to becoming a foreman,” said Vice President David Gaines.

He added, “We get to know our employees – their strengths and goals – and we build upon those together instead of looking for talent outside of our organization. It really builds a great culture within our company, and we believe it is a key component to what makes us successful.”
