Gaines and Company Announces Maryland Quarterly Safety Winner

Congratulations to Gabriel Lopez (left) in front of a Gaines earthmover, Winner of the Maryland Regional Excellence in Safety Award who stands with Alvaro Leon (right) nominating Foreman.

What does it take to be recognized for excellence in construction safety?  At Gaines and Company, a Maryland headquartered site development contractor, they look to their dedicated employees who strive for this high ideal in their tasks every day.  They recognize when a person takes safety seriously, and turns ‘safety’ into a verb, acting on it consistently until it becomes a daily habit of excellence.

This spring, the standout employee who received the Gaines and Company 1 QT Regional Excellence in Safety Award was Gabriel Lopez. Mr. Lopez, a pipelayer with Gaines for 3 years, has consistently risen to every safety challenge and, in short order, shown  an amazing ability to go above and beyond what is required in every scenario—from reporting possible safety issues, to inspecting equipment and tools, to looking out for his fellow workers.

Alvaro Leon, the foreman who nominated Gabriel, has always been impressed with his work ethic and says; “… Gabriel is always on top of everything—looking out for safety on all fronts; the teams, the equipment, and isn’t afraid to jump in and show someone how to do things more safely. He’s a great second pair of eyes…” Gabriel holds several safety certifications including the OSHA 10-HOUR, Confined Space, CPR Certificate and First Aid training—usual and required designations for best practices at Gaines and Company.

Mr. Lopez received a winner’s certificate and $150.00 credit in “safety bucks” towards gear at the company e-store. There, he can purchase jackets, boots, luggage, and various PPE as part of an ongoing incentive program to keep safety at the top of the list throughout the year.

Gaines and Company is a full-service site development, underground utilities, grading and excavation contractor with a groundbreaking safety excellence program. In both the Maryland and North Carolina divisions, a Safety Excellence Achievement Award is given on a quarterly basis to any employee who goes above and beyond in their dedication to safety.
