Job site maintenance prepares workers for safe work operations. From tidiness to maintenance, it is the responsibility of all workers to ensure that the work environment, including tools and personal protective equipment (PPE), are in safe-working condition. Pipelayer Eduardo Leon was recognized with Gaines and Company’s Safety Excellence Achievement Award for his consistent commitment to tool maintenance.

Gaines and Company is a turn-key site development company with nearly 70 years of experience, including underground utilities, grading and excavating, sediment and erosion controls, and road work. When performing large- and small-scale projects, Gaines and Company utilizes equipment from big machinery to small hand tools. This equipment, regardless of size, must be maintained and consistently inspected for safe functionality.

“Tools are a necessary aspect of our work. If not used or maintained correctly, though, they can pose a risk to worker safety,” said Supervisor Alvero Leon, who nominated Eduardo for the recognition. “We know we can rely on Eduardo to not only properly care for tools, but also ensure they are in good working condition before anyone begins work.”

Eduardo is a pipelayer in Gaines and Company’s Maryland region. He has been with the organization for three and half years, and his primary responsibilities include installing and preparing pipes for water, sewer, and storm drains.

Safety Director Dominic Pope said, “Gaines and Company has a reputable safety culture. We care about our employees and always put their safety first. Employees like Eduardo – who are committed to ensuring that every little detail of our work is safe— help us not only succeed, but keep everyone safe – which is our ultimate value.”
