Safety Is Blooming on Gaines Construction Sites

Gaines crews understand it takes a team approach to keep everyone safe during site development work.
As Spring’s sun surpasses Winter’s chill, there’s more than grading and utility work that Gaines and Company crews are gearing up for. They are also preparing for a little fun – while talking about safety.
“We work hard year-round, but things really pick up in the Spring with the nicer weather,” said Safety Director Dominic Pope. “It’s so important to always work as safely as possible. That’s why we meet often – especially in these busy months – to talk about looking out for each other and making safe decisions.”

Crews took a time-out from work to practice excavation safety during 2023 Trench Safety Week.
But these aren’t your normal safety conversations.
“We make it fun,” added Dominic. “We bring food and give out prizes. It’s just a casual time to hang out and talk about safety concerns we have on our minds. The sessions are very productive.”
This year, a team from Trench Tech will even visit some crews with hands-on excavation safety demonstrations using OSHA compliant shoring equipment.
“Falls are always in the top three leading causes of injuries and fatalities throughout the construction industry. They accounted for about a third of construction-related deaths in 2022. I won’t let that happen to anyone on our crews. We’ve got to make sure our work is safe for everyone, and the only way to do that is by approaching it as a team.”
Upcoming national safety observations include:
- OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction (May 6-10)
- Construction Safety Week (May 6-10)
- NUCA’s Trench Safety Standdown (June 17-23)
“These safety weeks are great. They directly relate to our grading and utility work as site developers,” said Dominic. “But one thing we – as an industry – need to remember is that we can’t have great discussions during these weeks and think our work is done. Our conversations must then transform into our everyday actions. That’s our goal at Gaines.”
