Gaines and Company Recognizes 2020 Year-End Safety Excellence Achievement Award Recipients

Gaines and Company developed the Safety Excellence Achievement Award in 2018 to recognize employees who show an exceptional commitment to all-around safety, from meticulously following safety processes and procedures to speaking up when an unsafe situation is identified. This dedication extends beyond personal safety, and into the well-being of everyone on the job site. Award recipients are selected from upper management, superintendents, foremen, and peers.

The esteemed safety award is presented on a quarterly basis at each Gaines and Company location, with one awardee from each location chosen for the year-end honor. The 2020 Safety Excellence Achievement distinction was presented to Maryland’s Jose Melara and North Carolina’s Jorge Ramirez.

“We don’t view the Safety Excellence Achievement Award as an incentive program. Instead, we look at it as a way to recognize employees for looking after their personal health and safety, as well as the health and safety of their fellow crew members,” said Safety Director Dominic Pope. “Both Jose and Jorge stand out when it comes to this. Their commitment and dedication to working with a safety attitude not only protects— but also inspires— those they work with. Thanks to employees like Jose and Jorge, the safety mindset of Gaines and Company is continually strengthened through their encouraging work performance.”

Jose Melara was the second quarter recipient of the Safety Excellence Achievement award for the Maryland location. He was recognized for his overwhelming commitment to team safety, always ensuring that his crew members were safely approaching each task.

“I can always count on Jose to speak up and address possible safety issues.”

The North Carolina Safety Excellence Achievement award was presented to Jorge Ramirez for the third quarter. His safety experience came from working his way up to a senior mainline co-operator. By keeping a diligent eye on his surroundings, Jorge consistently practices hazard awareness, keeping both himself and his coworkers safe at all times.

“He always has good comments and suggestions on how we can do things safer. He’s the epitome of a team player.”
