Working Miracles with Specialty Baseball Diamonds

Getting a chance to play the game of baseball is something every child should be able to do. But for those kids who are physically challenged, a traditional baseball diamond doesn’t exactly accommodate wheelchairs or crutches. This is what the Miracle League aims to do: provide an adaptive surface for children with disabilities so they can experience the joy and benefits that come from playing our National pastime–baseball.
After learning about The Miracle League, Gaines and Company joined forces with a team of contractors led by Tony Withers of Withers & Ravenel, donating all construction work to help create the Miracle League of the Triangle field in Wake County, North Carolina.
Now Miracle League teams in North Carolina consisting of a child and a volunteer “Buddy” can play on a custom-designed, totally flat rubberized turf field that accommodates wheelchairs and other assistive devices. These specialized surfaces are also designed to help prevent injuries. Gaines and Company is proud to have helped create an atmosphere that gives children with disabilities a “Yes I Can” outlook on life.
The Miracle League of the Triangle project won an award from American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina, Engineering Excellence Awards Competition, 2007.
